Musical Theatre - SonLight Performing Arts with Mrs. Frisbie
Welcome to the fun, melody-filled world of Musical Theatre! This class is perfect for new beginners and for students who've been on stage many times before. It is great for both extroverted children who love being in the limelight, and for shy students who enjoy music, singing, imagination, or want to make new friends, but do not wish to have any solo lines. Musical Theatre is also great for the assistant-minded student who would like to learn more about running all important aspects of backstage work. Students must have a high level of individual self-discipline/self-regulation as we work together and grow as a cohesive cast and crew.
During fall semester, we begin with work on our acting and singing skills, theatre games, improv, choreography/dance, and cast building. We will select a musical to perform that fits the students enrolled.
Musical Theatre is for all ages 7+ (either cast: acting, singing, choreo, or crew: tech, props, backstage). Responsible graduates (18+) may be involved with Musical Theatre as Assistant Director, Stage Manager, or Tech. Please let Mrs. Frisbie know if your older teen or college student is interested in this option.
Students enrolled must be able to stay on task when in class, show compassion and respect for castmates, and sing along often with the music at home or in the car to master the songs.
Parent Expectations & Agreements
1) Provide an easy way for your child to regularly listen to the music at home and/or in the car, and rehearse lines with them if they try out for a speaking role.
2) Keep tuition and supply fees up to date. I pay 20% of tuition for each student to HSP, as well as pay the leasing company for our musical contract for every single individual cast and crew member, purchase individual tshirts for each student enrolled, as well as costume items, props, set pieces, etc. To keep things fair for all, and so these fees can be paid, students will not be cast in roles if tuition is not up to date by casting dates, and students will not be able perform if tuition is not up to date by the 1st of a performance month. You are welcome to pay each semester in full at the beginning of the semester ($248 per semester).
3) Send your child to class & all rehearsals with a water bottle, pencil, and their script. Hydration is key for effective singing and performance.
4) Provide a working cell phone for texts and/or email to stay connected with musical theatre updates. Read your theatre email in full and respond when applicable.
5) Provide a costume base for your child. A costume base is an underlayer that ensures a student is fully clothed under their costume, or for quick changes needed, and in something that does not distract from the costume itself. In most cases a costume base will be all black -- long sleeve black shirt, black pants or ankle-length skirt, black shoes and black socks with no white soles or colors, no logos. Base pieces can be purchased inexpensively on Amazon, Target, Walmart, or second-hand stores. Costumes for the production will be very simple and items that can often be sourced from home, second hand stores, or re-worn again. We will work with a costumer/seamstress and also purchase or lease some costume pieces.

Teacher Related Experience
Mrs. Frisbie grew up participating heavily in musical theatre and vocal performance at all levels of education (elementary years through graduate school). She competed in voice at the All State level for ensemble and triple trio music during 3 years as an upperclassman. During Mrs. Lisa Hernandez' decade teaching Musical Theatre at Homeschool Plus (2010-2020), Mrs. Frisbie observed and learned the ropes as a supportive and involved parent. Following, she provided hands-on assistance, behind-the-scenes work, production, cast management, and occasional instruction during the 2020-2023 years of Mrs. Carrie Rubinow's Musical Theatre tenure (for Narnia, Oliver, and Charlie Brown). Mrs. Frisbie worked alongside and supported Davis Haymes' theatrical productions with upper classmen 2022-2025 (Our Town, And Then There Were None, Murder on the Orient Express, and A Christmas Carol). She has taught Musical Theatre classes, camps, and workshops 2023-2027, and directed We Knead a Little Christmas, The Tiny Train that Tried, Christmas Eve, and The Tortoise and the Hare. Mrs. Frisbie serves as a parent volunteer with children's musical theatre camps at The Academy of Arts in South Carolina, and as a coordinating assistant with many local Hampton Roads musical theatre camps and church productions. Mrs. Frisbie holds a teaching degree, B.A. in education, M.A. focus in human development, with doctoral work completed in the same emphasis. She has taught at all grade levels, in a variety of subjects, and continues her own music and theatre education with lessons and advcanced workshops whenever she can squeeze them in. Mrs. Frisbie’s children are very active in musical theatre, and participate in about a dozen musicals each year. As a result, she has ample experience as a theatre parent, and knows what it is like to be on both sides of the stage. She has a big heart for kids of all ages, for sharing Jesus’ love, and the music, story-telling, and theatre friendships that make a lifetime of difference for each child.
